As the developing world is reverting back to the use of coal as an industrial fuel, release of mercury in the atmosphere has come up as a major threat to the public health. Due to divergent economic and social interest of developing and the developed world international leadership of experts and policy makers are finding it difficult to enact a global treaty for the phasing out of mercury. A motion is being tabled at the IUCN world conservation congress 2012, for its acceptance and resolution accordingly.
